Liz's Story of Nelly

June 2

A plague of locusts has settled on our small kitchen. I have never seen children eat so much! Bella has fat, rosy cheeks, Neil has a little belly bulge and Nelly has already outgrown the size girls' 12 capri jeans we brought and is firmly ensconced in size girls' 14 Dockers! Between the constant walking and diarrhea (sorry) I think my belly bulge will remain somewhat under control.

We have been having a good time. Last night we went to the "fancy" McDonalds (now there's an oxymoron) but it really is fancy. It has a huge second story outdoor patio overlooking the river walk, with lovely European style patio furniture and umbrellas. The view is really lovely - riverboat cruise ships, sandy beaches and gorgeous bronze bridges. It was prom night (or whatever the equivalent is in Kiev) and many couples were dining alfresco at McDonalds! That was a sight - tall, beautiful, blond girls in glamorous frocks munching on Big Macs and Filet ó Fish!

The other American couple who is here on a similar schedule had their Court date yesterday. Ours may come as soon as Friday. IF so, we could possibly head home by Wednesday. In some ways I would like to stay the entire time, but I know the kids are all restless. Nelly is anxious and Bella and Neil miss their grandparents. Every time an ice cream hits the ground, a finger gets slammed in the drawer, the "alligator" won't work or we run out of drinkable yogurt, the howl starts...."I miss Grannnny & Pappyyyy...I waaaant my Barbara..." Bella's wish at the coin fountain was to spend the night at Maggie's house. It was actually very sweet, and I promised her she could when we get back. Otherwise, all is good. Other than the fleas. The warm weather has hatched the flea eggs in our carpet and Bella and I are covered in bites. Nelly has a few around her ankles, but the boys, being significantly less sweet, have none. Go figure.

We really are learning some fun ways of amusing ourselves. Rather than our usual round of Chuck E. Cheese, Playland, ballet, soccer, movies and the like, we watch potato bugs, feed pigeons and pet strays. Obviously, we also wash our hands a lot.

Monday is Bill's birthday. We haven't decided what we will do, as we may have official duties, but he would really like to sightsee a bit without kids. And watch a Dodger game.

We love and miss you all, and hope to see you soon! LOVE YOU!!!
